Dates, Nuts and Orange combine to create a yummy slice perfect for serving for morning or afternoon tea. Made using very basic ingredients, it comes together quickly so it is a great recipe for a last minute treat. Its a good old fashioned baked slice recipe that doesn’t disappoint with a fresh orange flavour.
You could easily replace the flour with gluten free flour to make it for the gluten intolerant.
Date and Orange Slice
Baked Slice with dates, nuts and flavoured with orange
Ingredients
- 175 gm Butter, melted
- 1 Cup Brown Sugar
- 1 Egg
- 1 Orange, Grated Rind Save 1 tsp for icing
- 1 Cup Dates, Diced
- 3/4 Cup Pecans or Walnuts, Chopped
- 1 1/2 Cup Self Raising Flour
Orange Icing
- 1 tsp Orange rind (reserved)
- 30 gm Softened Butter
- 2 Tbsp Orange Juice
- 200 gm Icing Sugar mixture
- 1-2 Tbsp Boiling Water
Instructions
- Preheat Oven 170 C
- Line slice tray with baking paper.
- Combine butter, sugar, rind and egg.
- Add dates, nuts and flour, combine well.
- Spread into lined slice tray and bake 25 minutes.
- Cool in the tray.
Orange Icing
- In a small bowl combine reserved orange rind, juice butter, icing sugar and enough boiling water to mix to a smooth icing (approx 1-2 Tbsp)
- Spread icing over cold slice allow to set about 15 mins and cut into 12-36 pieces.
