Cooking at Home

Society changed when women took on a bigger roll as an earner for the family. Before that there was most always someone at home to prepare meals and foods in the way our families had before us, and to pass on that knowledge through the family.

Given that now in most families both parents work, or are single parent households we have a need to work smarter in the kitchen. We need to share the load and be organised so that we eat well.

Having a range of dishes that are quick, easy and nutritious is important, also having dishes that certain family members can cook regularly helps ( John cooks X on Monday night when mum is late home from work) also spending a little extra time on the weekend planning and preparing for the week ahead helps.

We should all learn the basics of cooking, it truly is a life skill, I feel now more than ever it should be something we are taught in the school system from an early age. How to cook for ourselves, how to budget for the home and basic nutrition should be taught to secondary students to prepare them for independent living.

I have 2 young adult children to whom I have tried to teach some basics to so that if and when they need to they can cook a meal for themselves, I now need to teach them to tidy up afterwards as well. I was never very good when they were younger because I always wanted to take over to get the job done quicker and easier, but if you have the patience I never had by all means get the kids in the kitchen when they are young, baking is always a winner with the young ones.
